The answer was "sommelier" in keeping with our dining theme. Well done to all of you who correctly solved the tiebreaker.
Further to all your requests to reveal how we arrived at our tiebreaker answer, here goes!
My first is in sometimes but never in never,
Well, difficult start - taking out the letters n-e-v-e-r from 'sometimes' leaves us with many possibles for the first letter of the mystery word- S,O,M,T or I
My second, surprise! You can find in forever.
So the second letter is either F, O, R, E or V. 'Surprise' alludes to the letter O as in "oh!"
My third and my fourth letters match at its start,
Match at its start tells me that the first letter of 'match' are my third and fourth letters MM
My fifth can be found in a la carte.
Fifth letter A, L, C, R, T or E
So far is a war battle, one of a few,
This clue helps you eliminate the letters to get the first five letters which are SOMME
The next is not completely true.
If it's not true it must be a LIE. These are the next three letters which have also been hinted at individually in the following three clues
No champagne for my sixth, but look well in claret,
Removing the letters in champagne from claret gives us L, R or T
My seventh is in egoist but not in bouquet.
G, I or S
My eighth is in haute cuisine and also menu,
U, E or N
My ninth is in service, but not in venue.
S, R, I or C
My whole will ensure your meal is enhanced,
Well done! Now pour yourselves a glass of wine to celebrate (unless you happen to have a sommelier nearby to serve you!)
So solve, guess, decipher...go give it a chance!
