| Zir
Chemed treats on average three hundred fertility and
gynecology patients per month and has helped give the
gift of life to close to a thousand couples since its
founding in 1996. While a single profile cannot encompass
the breadth of individuals Zir Chemed helps, the following
examples are meant to shed light on the lives of those
Zir Chemed has brought light to – and how it has
helped them. |
| Rachel
and Benjamin, Mevaseret Zion |
This young couple, both in their mid twenties, were married
in Jerusalem in 1996. For the Brooklyn-born Rachel, who
moved to Israel after her wedding, having a baby was much
more than a religious obligation; it was the realization
of her life’s dream: to be a mom.
But by the time Rachel and Benjamin came to Zir Chemed
in 2001 – after suffering a miscarriage and countless
months of expensive, painful infertility treatments at top
centers in the United States – they were depressed
and despairing.
Zir Chemed’s clinical staff immediately ran a battery
of extensive, but relatively non-invasive, blood tests,
which revealed that Rachel suffered from a thyroid imbalance,
making conception difficult, and thrombophilia (coagulation
problems), significantly increasing the risk of spontaneous
miscarriage.
A careful balance of medications regulated Rachel’s
conditions and she was able to conceive. Sadly, she miscarried
a second time.
Despite their devastation, they approached Zir Chemed again
and Rachel and her husband were encouraged not to give up
hope. This time, following conception, Rachel received daily
anticoagulant shots, weathered three weeks of premature
contractions, and finally, after seven long years, gave
birth to a beautiful baby boy.
| Yehudit
and Gabi, Ramat Gan |
In their mid thirties, Yehudit and Gabi are a modern Orthodox
couple, married for xx years when they came to Zir Chemed.
Parents of two (naturally conceived) children – both
boys, they were trying to have a third child. Yehudit was
hoping for a girl.
After four years of trying, however, Yehudit and Gabi had
all but given up. While infertility in second – and
third – pregnancies is uncommon, it is a growing concern,
especially among couples older than 35. Yehudit had seen
half a dozen specialists, none of whom could identify a
source of their difficulties.
After careful monitoring of Yehudit’s ovulation,
however, Zir Chemed’s clinicians discovered that she
was actually ovulating very late in her cycle, and then
experiencing a precipitous drop in her hormones. Taken together,
these two factors made implantation unlikely and conception
impossible.
After this discovery, Yehudit received a single shot at
the time of her ovulation followed by progesterone supplements
– and got pregnant on the first cycle. Nine months
later, Yehudit and husband welcomed their darling daughter,
and today are expecting a fourth child – another girl.
